British communities

North Cyprus has an ever-growing number of British expats that have decided to swap the dull, damp and dreary British weather for a carefree life in the sun. Whilst many settle down in towns and villages all around North Cyprus, the most popular destinations for British residents seem to be Girne (Kyrenia) and Esentepe.

Kyrenia is a beautiful lively town on the North-west side of the island. It offers an idyllic relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle with plenty of shopping, and opportunities to dine out whilst overlooking the Kyrenia harbour and the Mediterranean Sea. Local cuisine can be enjoyed, and there are restaurants that offer French, English, Italian, Indian, Pakistani and Chinese food too.

Kyrenia offers a choice of several English-speaking schools as well as an English-run nursery for young children. There is an Anglican Church and Roman Catholic Church in Kyrenia, as well as an English Amateur Dramatics Society. Several associations run by British expats are active and advertise a variety of events and gatherings. Esentepe is a quieter village located some 20-minutes outside of Kyrenia. It provides the best of both worlds - a tranquil paradise village setting that is within striking distance of the main shops, restaurants and activities in Kyrenia.

Everywhere you go in North Cyprus the British are very welcome. British colonial rule was only relinquished in 1960, and Northern Cyprus has retained a lot of this 'Britishness'. Many customs and traditions will be familiar to you, making you feel right at home…even though you're in the warm sunshine!
